During the last period of January and the beginning of February the project bus has been passing frequently through Emmanuel’s doors as we have carried out the bigger trips with our transition groups. Just to catch you up, these are the groups of youth that receive intensive training during our project on how to live life on the outside. An important part of that training consists in taking them outside the orphanage walls, and showing them the real world and what their opportunities will be the day they choose to leave the orphanage. During the 5 days that we have been out with each of the three groups, we have shown them several of the universities and educational institutions in the capital Tegucigalpa, where they actually got to meet and talk to some of their friends that had recently left the orphanage. We took them on a trip around the capital using public bus, trying to teach them the “do´s” and don’ts’s” about how to behave in the city with a lot of eyes observing your every move, and every bill you take out of your pocket. During all three trips we visited a lot of different companies and workplaces ranging from industrial production sites to people making and selling food on the streets. We visited people making sugar, shoes, sweets, food, bread, jewellery, saddles, bags and so much more. Besides this being a lot of different types of jobs, the people we visited were also spread out over the entire country, both city and countryside, so the youth also got to know their country better.
One of the most important things we all took with us during the different trips, besides the obvious higher level of insights in opportunities, are the amazing testimonies of all the people we visited. Hearing stories of business owners who started their “careers” eating nothing more than a lump of bread or an avocado a day, is something that encourages our youth to look behind their past, and not let them be defined by it, but rather taking it as an opportunity to reach greatness; an opportunity to live a life of success rather than failure.
We are building leaders to change their society, and were not going to cease
