Transition classes

We help the teacher Carminda with the transition classes - every lesson starts with a short bible vers and some quistions that help the youth reflect on the text.
After we usually have a short energizer.
This energizer (look at the pictures) is about communication. They get for example the assignment to stand in line after their height but during the whole game they are not allowed to speak and they need to keep one food on the tape.

Saturday was a really good day. We had the pleasure of almost 40 girls in all participating in our two 'budget and bookkeeping' workshops. We had two hours with each group and it turned out really well. We started with an information about 'budget and bookkeeping' and then they were divided in groups, they were working on different cases, were they needed to solve a budget.

After presenting the budget they were getting a new assignment. They were given a 'monthly payment' - and they needed to take care of the money. They needed to go to the bank to pay the house fee, pay for the power and so on. They could buy food, clothes and other things if they wanted to. It was a game were they learned about monthly expenses.

Most girls like to dress up, do their hair and nails and so on - so we decided to make a beauty night with the girls from 'casa de tiernos'. It was a very nice evening.
We also did an explanation of why it's important to relax and how you can relax.

You can see a few pictures below.

A lot of different things have happened since the last update. The transition program is now a part of the high school and on the schedule it's called 'Orientación'. Every class receives two orientation lessons during a week. Right now they are all preparing different mini projects.
Below you see 1 Bachillerato - their mini project is about handing out toys and different things to some poor children in Guaimaca.

In the end of 2015 four new youth leaders were found and in February the danes had the pleasure of having guests from Emmanuel. The picture below is the four new leaders: from left Rebecca, Sissel, Mersy and Marzela.

The Youth Committee gathered for the first time on Tuesday the 29th of March in 2016. The new youth leaders and the committee are dreaming about how the project can look in the future. They talk about relevant subjects that they want to add to the orientation class.

Budgeting and Economy ;)

Picture
Last Saturday we had another exciting activity in the project. Knowing that our youth don’t really have experience handling money on their own, we find it necessary to provoke them to think about planning their economy. Therefore, this Saturday we made a workshop on how to make a personal budget and then we made them try it out in a small simulation game where we had created a small town with a bank, a store, a clinic, a school and a transportation office. The youth got a case on beforehand, which indicated how much they earned, and what different kinds of expenses that they were going to have. They then had to make a budget with the data from their case, and later they had to try out their budget making purchases in the store, going to the clinic, paying for their kids education in the school, paying transportation and paying rent, water and electricity bills in the bank. The youth had a really good time, and at the same time they got to understand the importance of planning their expenses and making a budget. Sometimes a young inexperienced individual might be overwhelmed and excited about having their own money between their fingers, and they are tempted to go out and buy expensive phones before they think about rent, electricity and food. We are trying to prepare them for that temptation and to get them an experience of planning their economy so they don’t have to learn it the hard way once they live outside the orphanage and suddenly cant pay rent, or doesn’t have money to pay their kids school.

Trip to national reserve

This Saturday we visited the national reserve called “El Chile” with a group of youth. The idea was to give the youth the opportunity of spending time experiencing the beauty of their own country that they so rarely get to see. We went there with a guide who showed us around the reserve and at the same time explained the importance of thinking about the environment to preserve sites such as this. After talking for a while about the park and environmental issues, the guide took us to a waterfall where we made a barbeque meal on the grill that we had dragged along walking through the mountainsides. We enjoyed the time spend at the waterfall and later moved on to a river where we had the opportunity to go swimming, something most of the youth had never tried before. It was a day of fun and a bit of learning for the youth, and it was an opportunity for us to build relationships with them, which always makes it easier for us to work with them in the future. Our project spends a lot of time and resources warning and creating attention about the dangers that are very real in Honduras, but we believe it to be important also to show the beauties of the country so that our youth might be passionate about being Honduran and wanting to improve and fight for the positive sides of their country.

Picture
Saturday we had a lifeskill training, where we made piñatas. We was gathered en total 30 persons for this little workshop from 09.00 am – 03.00 pm. We had two local ladies from the town coming and teaching the youth about how to make piñatas. It was very exciting and we heard from more of the youth, that they thought it also was exciting and a very good lesson. We had a good day with both fun and seriousness with these piñatas. There was made figures of hearts, Mickey Mouse, a globe, and a cone. In total they made 8 piñatas, where we afterwards dealt them out to different houses at Emmanuel. There were many smiles at the faces of the children when they got a piñata for every house.

Friday afternoon we had the last meeting with the youth from the transitiongroups no. 4 and 5. They were making an evaluation about the session where they have been taught in different subjects. We talked about how it was to be a part of this transition session and we had a funny time eating a piece of "goodbye-and-thank-you-cake" and a glass of "goodbye-and-thank-you-soda".
As leaders we are very proud of the youth that they have participated in the transitionprogram with happiness and willing to.

We will as soon as possible start new transition groups.

Youth Committee

2/11/2015

First of all we will say sorry for not posting anything on the page since December, but it’s because we’ve had so many things to do in this period. There will come some few updates about some events we’ve had in the last couple of weeks.

But this update will be about one of our big objectives in the project that we have had an information meeting about a youth committee. We had this information meeting two days ago with 51 participants above 16 to listen what this youth committee is about.
We got the youth informed about the project, how it function and what they’re going to do. It seemed like they were interested in this. We’ve heard a lot of positive feedback from both boys and girls. We take that as a victory, because it’s a part objective of the project. We’ve been giving them a deadline to when they have to tell us if they want to be a part of the youth committee.

In the youth committee there will be 7 or 9 youth where they will decide which themes as the project needs to touch so the youth on Emmanuel and themselves can be prepared to leave the orphanage someday. So the idea is to inform them about democracy (That’s why we have 7 or 9 youth so they can try to vote about stuff and try that the majority decide what’s going to happen). Beside that we want to equip them to be leaders, making decisions and take responsibility. They will see that they have a voice and it can be used.

There will be followed up on this.

We are building leaders to change the society!
